jonny rhea: baby sitter
Stuston Farm shop's rheas are laying eggs. You can see a rheas egg in the farmshop; please just ask a member of staff.
Jonny has been told by Edda and Katie that in rhea world the males take the responsibility for caring for the eggs, while the females go out and bring home the insects and grain. Jonny is looking a little bemused and has been seen to be muttering darkly about a stitch up while scratching away at the ground before sitting down to rest his injured leg.
Rheas are not monogamous and the males scratch a nest in the soil with their three-toed feet padding the nest with leaves and twigs before sitting and guarding up to 50 eggs, which take between 35 and 40 days to hatch, all at once!
Spare eggs have been used as a tactic to draw the attention of predators away from the nest.

eddie's blind date moves in
Eddie was looking way too relaxed, rattling around his large bachelor pad at Stuston Farm, so we sent him on a blind date. We wanted Eddie to have a lorrah, lorrah fun and so we gave Eddie three hopefuls to choose from. In time honoured fashion, Eddie asked three questions and from their answers he would make his choice.
- Eddie: To contestant #1 first, how would you describe yourself?
- Contestant #1: You could say that I like the high life. I live life in the fast lane and I am looking for fun rather than long-term commitment.
- Contestant #2: I may not be the brightest tool in the box, but I know how to have fun. Once in a while I like to fly the coup and go out with my girl friends.
- Contestant #3: It's all about the hunt for me. Once I see what I want I swoop in for the kill.
- Eddie: Thank you all. To contestant #2 first, would you describe yourself as sporty?
- Contestant #2: Well I have been known to confuse a golf ball for one of my eggs, so I get a little nervous at Ryder Cup time. I did like watching that nice Tim Henman at Wimbledon, though.
- Contestant #3: I suppose that you could say I like game more than sports.
- Contestant #1: I am super-athletic and enjoy running with my friends.
- Eddie: Lastly, to #3 first, what do you look for in your perfect mate?
- Contestant #3: I like someone that I can rely on for life, but is also independent and enjoys the thrill of the chase, just like me.
- Contestant #1: As I lead such a busy life I need my mate to look after the kids [mine and my sisters'].
- Contestant #2: It is important to me to be well looked after. When my mate finds something I like I want him to call me and remember, ladies first!
- Jeremy: So Eddie, what's an Eagle Owl to do? Will you pick super-athletic contestant #1 who likes to live life in the fast lane while you stay at home and look after the kids?
- Or will you pick contestant #2 who likes to be looked after but struggles to tell the difference between her children and a golf ball?
- Or will you pick contestant #3 the huntress whose up for any game?
- The choice is yours...
- Eddie: Thank you, Jeremy. Contestant #3 sounds like my kind of bird!
And the rest is history. Contestant #3 we now know as Eve, shares the Owl Enclosure with him.
